"Greg Errico and Alex
Doré of FAMILY WITHOUT STONE have joined forces with Gail
Muldrow from Graham Central Station, Tom Pool from Malo, as well as
Richard Howell, with featured vocalist Fred Ross to create LIPS, HANDS
& FEET: an exciting power packed, Otis Redding revue. The band
brings back that classic "Otis sound". Greg was a founding
member and the drummer of Sly & The Family Stone; Alex and Gail also
were members of that ground-breaking band. Rock trivia buffs: did you
know that in their early days, Sly & The Family Stone also performed
an Otis Redding revue?" |

"Over at
Tiburon’s Calypso (formerly the Dock) on Thursdays and
Fridays, a handful of alumni from Sly & The Family Stone,
Graham Central Station, and Malo, now calling themselves as
LIPS, HANDS & FEET, are putting on an Otis Redding revue to
packed houses, fronted by Minor Williams, cousin of former Tower
of Power vocalist Lenny Williams. Last week, Santana
percussionists Jose "Chepito" Areas, Michael Carabello
and Michael Shrieve were checking it out, along with San
Francisco Giants great Orlando Cepada." |

"LIPS,
HANDS & FEET Performing at the STONE, on Broadway, San
Francisco, CA. LH&F is built around a few former members of
Sly & The Family Stone. And the group plays material culled
from the repertoire of Otis Redding. Can’t get much better
than that. A demo that’s floating around shows that they’ve
got the sound down pretty good. A show to catch for lovers of
timeless soul music." |

"Meanwhile,
LIPS, HANDS & FEET have been turning up on bills with
increasing regularity playing the classic soul of Otis Redding.
I caught them at the STONE in March. What’s nice about LH&F
as compared to most of the Big Chill bands they’re likely to
be lumped with is that they don’t seem to have it in them to
put on a slick stage show. Built around former Sly Stone
associates Greg Errico and Alex Doré, L,H, &F are still
more about music than nostalgia, though that’s certainly what
they’re selling. Songs like "Respect," ‘These Arms
Of Mine" and "Mr. Pitiful" will always be special
and this group presents them faithfully. Errico, Doré and
another former Family Stone member, sax player Jerry Martini,
put out a vigorous, funky 12-inch last year, "Still Not
Over You," which makes me hope they pursue their original
muse again. But, if you’re going to specialize in covers, I
suppose you can’t do much better than Otis." |

SOLID STONE –
One listen to FAMILY WITHOUT STONE’s "Still Not Over
You" 12- inch (on Paisano Records) and you might assume it’s
from another young, promising exponent of the Minneapolis sound.
But check the credits and you’ll see that there are no Prince
protégés or Time spinoffs listed – the group is made up of
former members of Sly & the Family Stone. Makes sense since
lots of folks in the Twin Cities have worn out their Sly Stone
records through the years. FAMILY WITHOUT STONE consists of
founding Family Stoners Greg Errico on drums and Jerry Martini
on tenor, plus lead man/multi-instrumentalist Alex Doré, who
worked in the studio with Sly from 1976 through 79’. The
single is a terrific, funky Doré original. Now if they could
only get Sly in the studio – or else go in themselves and cut
an entire LP….." |

"Former
members of Sly & the Family Stone – drummer Greg Errico,
saxist Jerry Martini and bassist Alex Doré – have released a
12-inch single under the name FAMILY WITHOUT STONE, looking
forward to including more former members of the great soul-rock
band in future projects, including Sly himself when his legal
problems clear up enough to allow him back in California…" |

"Even
though Sly Stone lives in exile in New Jersey these days, three
former members of various Sly outfits maintain the high-energy,
crossover funk sound that he pioneered nearly two decades ago.
FAMILY WITHOUT STONE, based here in the city, is comprised of
bassist/vocalist Alex Doré, drummer Greg Errico, and
saxaphonist Jerry Martini. Their new single "Still Not Over
You," packs the brass-wallop of old, but also has the synth-funk
strains of Sly-sound-alike Prince. Family performs regularly
around town, and plans on a re-genesis of sorts by recording
some old songs and brining back as many of the original members
as possible. Errico reports that "Sly himself might sing on
a track or two."" |
